Hurricanes are a fact of life for many boaters. And the photos of the destruction left behind strike fear in our hearts.

Can I really do anything to save my boat if a hurricane is headed my way?

The answer is yes. Your efforts can considerably improve your boat's chances.

I remember the first time I heard that a tropical storm was heading straight for my location and could turn into a hurricane. Eek! How were we supposed to prepare?

It was back in 2003 in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. We were in a remote area with just a couple of books on board that had short chapters on hurricane preparation. 

What a wake-up call that was! Luckily the top winds were "only" about 50 knots and we escaped with no damage. But it pointed out the need to think quite seriously about how we'd prep for a hurricane and prepare a plan and checklists.

And so my journey down the path of learning what did and didn't work to save boats from hurricanes began. 

It turns out that there's a lot you can do to improve your boat's chances. I learn more and more with each storm; over and over, I talk, email and text with people about their experiences and read accounts of what happened. 

But over and over, I'm struck by how little comprehensive information there is. Sure, you can find numerous articles with "10 Tips for Preparing for a Hurricane" -- I have even written some!

But I have yet to see any resources that put the whole picture together:

• What should you consider in choosing a location for your boat?
• What supplies do you need to have on hand?
• What planning do you need to do before hurricane season?
• How do you prepare a hurricane plan for your insurer?
• Step-by-step, how do you prepare your boat?
• What do you need to know when you're looking at forecasts?
• Why do some boats survive when others don't?

Since 2004, I've been talking to people about hurricane prep, writing articles and giving seminars. Hundreds of people have downloaded my hurricane checklists.
