From Carolyn Shearlock, founder of The Boat Galley and 13-year cruiser:
Living aboard sounds fun, romantic. Until you start making the move.
The problem? The storage space just isn't set up like it was in your land-based home, and there's far less of it. What do you need? What do you have to give up? And where do you put it all?
There are piles of "stuff" everywhere. The boat's a disaster zone. You can't find what you want. And you quickly wonder if you were nuts.
Let’s face it, we want an enjoyable life on the boat, not just camping out. But how can we have our food, clothes, tools, documents, electronics, and perhaps a bit of stuff for fun when our home is one-tenth the size of the one we moved out of?
Not only do we need to find places for everything, but there are also more dangers to protect it all from. The motion of the boat. Heat. Humidity. Cold. Leaks. Breakage. Things we've never had to think about before.
Oh, I get the frustration. Our first year cruising, I went nuts with putting things here, then there, then rearranging once again as I discovered what didn't work.
Clothes that mildewed. Books that got damp and all the pages stuck together. Bugs in my box mixes. Medicines that went bad. Clanking glasses and pans. But more than that, was just feeling disorganized. That there was no rhyme or reason to where anything was.
We'd need a part and couldn't find it. I'd swear we couldn't be out of juice for breakfast, but had no idea where it was. There was more than one testy exchange as to whose responsibility it was to be able to find whatever it was we were looking for.
Bit by bit, I honed my techniques for stowing everything aboard. It took seven years of cruising aboard our first boat before I felt I had settled into our floating home.
But then when we moved aboard our second boat, even though it was smaller and laid out very differently from our first, I discovered that the techniques I'd learned made it simple to organize and store everything we wanted.
I'd had to learn how to store my entire life aboard by trial and error. Occasionally as I'd visit another boat I'd get an idea but it was generally a long, slow process as I tried different things.
I don’t want you to spend seven years figuring it out for yourself when I can give you all my tips and tricks in just a few hours.
No, you don’t need a larger boat. You just need ideas on how to use the space you've got. I can help you with that.
Hi! I’m Carolyn Shearlock. My husband and I have been cruising over 13 years and 12,000 miles, first on a Tayana 37 monohull and now on a 34’ Gemini catamaran. Along the way, we sold pretty much everything we owned (twice!), gained a great boat dog, had a bunch of wonderful times and some adventures . . . and learned a ton about what does and doesn’t work!
This course is an expanded version of one I teach at Cruisers University.
You’ll get tips and see photos to give you ideas on how to store everything aboard your boat:
You'll also get:
This is an expanded version of the Storage Strategies course I taught at 2018 Cruiser's University.
Plus, you get access to a private Facebook group where you can ask questions of me and other course participants, and where you can share your successes. This is great for any unusual items you may want to take along or non-typical storage areas.
